How much integration with the Bridge do you need?

In the case of the BNWAS you need to give careful thought to the level of initial integration you carry out on the bridge of the vessel, or you might find yourself calling your installers back in, or create a lot of additional work for your crew.

Over the last few months I have travelled all over Europe doing demos of the wireless BNWAS WatchKeeper+. When it comes to compliance technology the general mandate is minimum cost, maximum functionality and an installation that causes least disruption possible. The wireless system ticks all of these boxes.

In every presentation I give I make it clear that if you choose a basic install of any BNWAS you will save a costs but your crew will need to manually control the system. This will result in an authorized member of crew being responsible for activation when underway and deactivation on arrival. It will also require the system to manually reset every 12 minutes.

When the aforementioned circumstances are put the in the context of a busy bridge, you could be creating a rod for your own back. So, you can opt for a variety of automation levels.

• Integrate into the autopilot so the system activates automatically when underway.
• Integrate with ECDIS, a computer mouse, or up to six bridge systems. This will automate the reset process when using bridge systems.
• PIR movement sensors can be installed as the reset function.

As a manufacturer we explain the option but the level of integration and automation is down to the individual yacht policy.

A final thought on BNWAS:

Future-proofing is not often mentioned by many BNWAS companies but it is of vital importance. Current regulations do not require data storage but it is widely believed it will become necessary with two years. We offer a simple SD card based memory storage system that will record up to 500 weeks of data but many systems do not. As regulations are not yet defined consider carefully the system you choose or you might find yourself taking it out again in a couple of years.

As wireless technology offers greater and greater cost saving options on retrofitting we will see more and more wireless technology replace cabling and creating cost saving for refits and new build across the market. We can offer a wired system but the sales ratio is 50 to 1 against the wireless system and shows a clear change in perception and a wide acceptance and trust of wireless technology.
